Colorado Knox Club Castlewood Canyon Hike

Join special college guest and volunteer naturalist Linda Pohle '69 and area Knox alumni for a nature hike and lunch gathering.

Due to forecasts of 4" to 10" of snow in the Castlewood Canyon area for April 29, this even has been rescheduled. All other details remain the same.

Saturday, May 13, 2017—NEW DATE!
Castlewood Canyon State Park Hike

Protecting the ruins of the historic Castlewood Dam which broke in 1933, this state park offers not only impressive front range views from Pike's Peak to Long's Peak, it permits a glimpse into geologic and local history.

9:00 a.m., Prepare to Hike!
Canyon Point Parking Lot, Castlewood Canyon State Park
2989 South Highway 83, Franktown, CO 80116

Our approximate two-hour hike begins at 9:15 a.m. on the Lake Gulch and Inner Canyon trails, with a short trail spur to the historic dam overlook. Throughout the morning, we will keep an eye out for turkey vultures and early-blooming wildflowers.

Our two-and-a-half mile (approximate) round-trip hike is considered moderate level due to parts of the trail being rocky and uneven. There is also about a 200 foot elevation change. Hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes are suggested. Be prepared for the outdoors (hat, sunscreen, water, etc), and bring your camera to capture some spectacular views of the Front Range. Cell service is spotty so plan accordingly. Family members are welcome to join us.

The park opens at 5:00 a.m. Restrooms will be available at the Canyon Point Parking Lot, but the Visitor Center will not open until 9:00 a.m. There is no fee to attend; however there is a $7 per vehicle entrance fee paid at the park entrance. This fee allows you re-entry to Castlewood Canyon State Park later that day through both the east and west entrances.

In case of inclement weather, Saturday, May 13, 2017 is scheduled as the rain/snow date. You will be contacted on or before early morning on April 29, 2017, if the back-up date will be needed. Other than the date, all of the event details would remain the same.

Linda Pohle '69: "I'm a native of St. Louis and came to Colorado after graduating from Knox in 1969 to attend DU graduate school. My degrees are both in English literature. I then toiled in corporate communications positions for 16 years before going out on my own as a free-lance marketing communications writer in 1987. I happily retired in 2015 and began volunteering at Castlewood in 2000. Any volunteer work that involved wearing hiking boots was good in my book! I help at the Visitor Center (sold John Fielder a pass on his first visit to the park) and at park events. I've written brochures, histories, and newsletter articles for the Friends of Castlewood and the CPW Outdoors Colorado blog. My favorite activities are identifying wildflowers (plants stay still for identification) and being a raptor monitor (birds do not). I keep volunteering because it makes me feel I am helping to protect this special little park on the plains."

Noon, Meet up for Lunch
Trading Post Room, Parker Garage
19420 East Mainstreet, Parker, CO 80138

After the hike, we will enjoy lunch and conversation at the historic Parker Garage, located on Parker's Mainstreet, about twenty minutes north on Highway 83 (Parker Road) from Castlewood Canyon State Park. Plenty of free parking is available in a large lot across the street in O'Brien Park as well on Mainstreet. Ordering off the menu with separate checks will be in place.

RSVP by Wednesday, April 26, 2017. Register online now, or contact Alumni Relations at alumni@knox.edu or 309-341-7238.
